King Stumbles Out Of the Gate

This week, King (NYSE: KING  ) , maker of the smash hit mobile game Candy Crush Saga, went public at $22.50 per share. This was a widely anticipated IPO, yet shares immediately pulled back. Investors have been concerned at how heavily dependent the company is on its one single hit, with its second and third top performers falling way behind the success of Candy Crush, despite all being very similar variations of the same game.

Investors have also been concerned about King's "freemium" business model, where gamers play for free, and then buy in-app purchases. Comparisons to Zynga (NASDAQ: ZNGA  ) were unavoidable, as the company also went public after the success of a freemium model game, and then performed poorly as a stock after its IPO.

In this segment from Friday's Tech Teardown, host Erin Kennedy and Motley Fool tech and telecom bureau chief Evan Niu discuss the mobile gaming business and how difficult it can be for a company to create a second blockbuster despite the massive success of its first. Evan also discusses the major risks investors in King face today.

The Internet Fund Avoiding Facebook, Rest Of Bubble 2.0

Have you heard the one about the Internet fund that's afraid of dot-coms?

It sounds like a bad money manager joke, but that's actually the best way to describe the Kinetics Internet Fund. "Truthfully, if we changed the name, we'd probably get more money," says cofounder and portfolio manager Peter Doyle, jacket slung over a chair in a conference room at his midtown Manhattan office.

Doyle's quip has two meanings: His Internet Fund was once the darling of Wall Street–one of the top-performing mutual funds of 1998 and 1999. But it crashed and burned a lot of investors, falling from $1.4 billion in assets in early 2000 to as low as $188 million by 2002.

But Doyle is not just referring to his fund's lingering tech-bubble taint–he's also speaking about his alternative approach.

Despite its seemingly self-evident name and legacy as the first ever Internet-focused mutual fund, there aren't many websites left in Doyle's 56-company portfolio today. Instead Doyle is proving that in the current bubbly environment for stocks of social networks and mobile apps, the best way to make money from the Net is old-fashioned: value stocks with long product life cycles, deep content libraries, ample cash flow–and ideally a billionaire behind the wheel.

Hot High Tech Stocks For 2014

Kinetics Internet has a mere $180 million in assets and is one of eight mutual funds, including the much larger Paradigm Fund, run by $9.7 billion Horizon Kinetics. In 2013 it ranked among the top-performing equity mutual funds, logging a 44% gain. Since its inception in 1996 the fund's 16% average annual return has more than doubled that of the S&P 500. Its 1.8% expense ratio is steep, but that has more to do with its size than costs. Turnover at the no-load fund is a mere 8%.

Kinetics Internet doesn't own any Facebook stock because Doyle, 51, says he doesn't feel comfortable investing in a site so exposed to the whims of popular opinion–let alone one that is spending $19 billion on WhatsApp, a messaging service with only $20 million in revenues.

"Maybe WhatsApp is a great investment," he says. "But I've got my doubts, and certainly handing over $15 billion in stock tells you what they think about their company. They're not interested in buying back their shares; they're giving them away."

Top 10 Paper Companies To Buy Right Now

Bruce Smith/AP WASHINGTON -- U.S. factories orders climbed in November, led by a surge in aircraft demand. And businesses stepped up spending on machinery, computers and other long-lasting goods, a sign of investment that could fuel economic growth. Factory orders rose 1.8 percent in November, the Commerce Department said Monday. That follows a 0.5 percent decrease in October. Orders received by manufacturers totaled a seasonally adjusted $497.8 billion in November, the highest level on records dating to 1992. Orders have increased 2.5 percent over the past 12 months. The improvements could signal accelerating growth in 2014. Americans are buying more cars and homes, increasing demand for steel, furniture and other goods. That has led factories to hire more workers, generating additional economic momentum. Still, overall economic growth remains modest by historical standards. And though factory orders have strengthened in recent months, their growth rate has slowed during the recovery from the 2008 financial crisis. A 21.8 percent jump in volatile aircraft orders drove the November gains. But orders rose in many other categories, a sign of strength at factories and confidence among companies. Core capital goods, a proxy for business investment, rose 1 percent. Economists watch this category because it excludes volatile orders for aircraft and defense equipment. Demand also rose for construction machinery, computers, communications equipment, furniture and motor vehicle parts. Most of the gains occurred in long-lasting goods, which increased 3.4 percent in November. Orders for nondurable goods such as food products, clothing and paper rose a modest 0.3 percent. Separate economic reports indicate that manufacturing has remained strong and could drive further growth. Factory activity in December remained near a 2½-year high, according to the Institute for Supply Management. The trade group said last week that its index of manufacturing activity slipped to 57 in from 57.3 in November. That's still the second-highest reading since April 2011. And any reading above 50 signals growth. Manufacturers have also bolstered hiring in recent months. Factories added 66,000 jobs from July through November, according to government's employment reports. The government releases its December employment report Friday.

  • [By Seth Jayson]

There's no foolproof way to know the future for Resolute Forest Products (NYSE: RFP  ) or any other company. However, certain clues may help you see potential stumbles before they happen -- and before your stock craters as a result.

  • [By George Putnam]

Resolute Forest Products (RFP), formerly known as AbitibiBowater, entered into bankruptcy in early 2009, weighed down by roughly $6 billion in debt.

  • [By Saibus Research]

Consolidation has been incremental in the paper and forest products industry. In May 2012, Resolute Forest Products (RFP) (formerly AbitibiBowater) announced that it had acquired 50.1% of Fibrek and acquired the remaining 49.9% in August. 2011 saw International Paper (IP) announce a hostile takeover of Temple-Inland and after offering $32/share in cash as well as the assumption of $600M of TIN's debt, IP was able to close the deal in February 2012. 2011 also saw Rock-Tenn (RKT) acquire Smurfit-Stone to create the number two player in the linerboard segment with 20% market share, trailing only International Paper's 40%. We see these moves as a prudent step to consolidation in the industry as certain types of paper such as newsprint and uncoated free sheet (office paper) are seeing falling demand due to increased use of digital resources.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

    Why are REITs under fire?
Congress has been looking at a number of potential revenue-raising measures lately, so provisions that involve corporate tax breaks are a natural place to look. Moreover, many companies have been looking to take advantage of REIT status for all or a part of their operations, leading to concerns that the REIT format is being abused. Forest-products and timber giant Weyerhaeuser (NYSE: WY  ) converted itself to a REIT back in 2010, using its extensive timberland holdings as justification for the move. But recently, even casino operator Penn National Gaming has looked into putting its real-property holdings into a separate REIT as a possible tax-savings mechanism, with the company having gained the support of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board last week to take the step toward REIT status.

But you can see in several places the consequences of the stampede toward high yield. Here are just a few:

Closed-end funds Cornerstone Progressive (NYSEMKT: CFP  ) and Pimco High Income (NYSE: PHK  ) both make fixed payments back to fund shareholders on a monthly basis, and their distribution yields are truly extraordinary, at about 17% and 12%, respectively. Those dividends have enticed shareholders to pay $1.30 to $1.40 or more for each $1 of assets in the funds. Yet during most months, a substantial portion of those distribution payments has simply been a return of investor capital rather than true income from the funds' investments. A recent study discussed in The Wall Street Journal found that returns on a portfolio with a combined value and dividend-income strategy outperformed a strategy focused more exclusively on maximizing dividends by an average of 1.7 percentage points per year, a huge edge in long-run returns. In the dividend ETF arena, most funds tend to focus on maximizing yield. Although the popular Vanguard Dividend Appreciation (NYSEMKT: VIG  ) ETF bucks the trend by screening first for consistent dividend growth and only then looking at yield as a factor, many rival ETFs start with high-yielding stocks as their baseline and only then consider other desirable traits. Others focus solely on high-dividend niches of the market, such as iShares FTSE NAREIT Mortgage-Plus (NYSEMKT: REM  ) and its concentration on high-yield mortgage REITs.

When dividend stocks get too popular, their prices get out of line with both their dividend income and the fundamentals of the businesses that underlie those stocks. In simpler terms, when dividend stocks become bad values, it's time to consider looking elsewhere for a margin of safety.

IRS to Treat Bitcoin as Property for Tax Purposes

Bitcoin’s vagabond days may be drawing to a close.

The IRS on Tuesday issued a notice saying it would treat virtual currency such as bitcoin as property for federal tax purposes. “General tax principles applicable to property transactions apply to transactions using virtual currency.”

Bitcoin users who have operated largely without government oversight since the digital currency’s introduction in 2009 now have to think about tax implications and reporting.

They may be subject to capital gains taxes, in contrast to individual traders in international currency markets, who treat gains and losses as real income when filing tax returns.

The bitcoin decision has a number of implications laid out by the IRS in a set of frequently asked questions.

Wages paid to employees in virtual currency are taxable to the employee. An employer must report these on a W-2 form. And they are subject to federal income tax withholding and payroll taxes.

In addition, payments using virtual currency made to independent contractors and other service providers are taxable, and self-employment tax rules generally apply. Payers normally must issue Form 1099.

The character of gain or loss from the sale or exchange of virtual currency depends on whether the virtual currency is a capital asset — like stocks, bonds and other investment property — in the hands of the taxpayer.

If it is, a taxpayer generally realizes capital gain or loss.

If the sale or exchange of virtual currency is not a capital asset in the taxpayer’s hands—e.g., inventory and other property held mainly for sale to customers in a trade or business—the taxpayer generally realizes ordinary gain or loss.

In addition, payment made using virtual currency is subject to information reporting to the same extent as any other payment made in property.

Disney's Numerous Future Potential Growth Catalysts

Source: Disney.com.

Disney (NYSE: DIS  ) recently announced a lot of news at once. This news includes a third installment to the Cars franchise, a second installment to The Incredibles franchise, and new information about Star Wars: Episode VII. Disney acquired Lucasfilm for $4 billion back in 2012, giving it the rights to the Star Wars franchise.

Future installments
Cars 3 and The Incredibles 2 are both set to be released after 2015. In order to determine the potential for these two films, we must look at past results.

The original Cars had a production budget of $120 million. It grossed $244 million at the domestic box office and $462 million at the worldwide box office.

The sequel, Cars 2, didn't perform as well at the domestic box office, but it performed better than the original at the worldwide box office. This likely stemmed from the movie taking place overseas. This seemed to be a strategic move by Disney, but domestic moviegoers felt let down. Cars 2 had a production budget of $200 million. It grossed $191 million at the domestic box office and $560 million at the worldwide box office. Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see if Disney goes for the domestic or international moviegoer.

The Incredibles had a production budget of just $92 million. It went on to gross $261 million at the domestic box office and $631 million at the worldwide box office.

Then there's Star Wars.

Star Wars news
Disney hasn't given much away, but there are some clues. These clues include that some very familiar faces will be in Star Wars: Episode VII and that there will be a trio of new young leads. The only character that we know is certainly returning is R2-D2.

We also know that JJ Abrams is the director, that John Williams is still the composer, and that Disney's open auditions called for a street smart orphan girl in her late teens as well as a smart and capable male in his late teens or early 20s. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Driver will play the villain.

Disney's approach of dropping small hints every once in a while is brilliant. In marketing, it has been proven that this is an effective approach, as it heightens consumer excitement.

Other reasons to consider Disney
In addition to the above potential growth catalysts, which should further improve brand recognition, Disney owns ABC, ESPN, and all Disney channels; it's a retailer; and it's a theme park operator. This diversification is what makes Disney so attractive to many investors. If one segment falters, another sector often picks up the slack. Below is a breakdown of revenue per segment for fiscal-year 2013:

Fiscal Year 2013

Revenue

Media Networks

$20.36 Billion

Parks and Resorts

$14.09 Billion

Studio Entertainment

$5.98 Billion

Consumer Products

$3.56 Billion

Interactive

$1.06 Billion

Source: Statista.com

Disney's future potential with Cars, The Incredibles, and Star Wars franchises can lead to revenue gains in each segment. In addition to aforementioned growth potential areas, these brands can be leveraged to the television market, implemented in theme parks, and be made into video games. Therefore, these brands go well beyond the box office.

Of course, Star Wars: Episode VII should be a massive success. The movie wouldn't even have to impress moviegoers to sell tickets. The brand is that strong. And in addition to future installments for the Cars and The Incredibles franchises, Frozen will have a sequel and a show on Broadway, and Shanghai Disney Resort is set to open on Dec. 31, 2015. Shanghai is a wealthy and highly populated city with more than 14 million people -- a very good combination for Disney.

Disney also stacks up well against entertainment giants Time Warner (NYSE: TWX  ) and Twenty-First Century Fox (NASDAQ: FOXA  ) . First, consider top-line performances over the past year:

DIS Revenue (TTM) Chart

DIS Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts.

Twenty-First Century Fox has grown its top line the fastest, and that should be recognized. However, Twenty-First Century Fox doesn't have anything close to what Disney has in future growth catalysts.

Twenty-First Century Fox did deliver a 15% increase in revenue in the second quarter, primarily thanks to the inclusion of Sky Deutschland revenue and a 14% boost in affiliate revenue growth in its Cable Networking Program segment.

In regards to filmed entertainment and future brand potential, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Walking with Dinosaurs don't compare to what Disney has to offer.

Furthermore, while Twenty-First Century Fox is impressive, it doesn't compare to Disney in merchandising potential. With all the aforementioned movie brands, Disney will have extraordinary merchandising opportunities, especially with Star Wars.

As far as Time Warner goes, it has been growing the slowest, but it does offer a 1.9% dividend yield, higher than Disney and Twenty-First Century Fox at 1.1% and 0.8%, respectively. This might entice dividend investors, but Disney is very capable of increasing capital returns to shareholders in the future.

Time Warner's fourth-quarter revenue improved 5% to $8.6 billion in the fourth quarter. TBS (cables #1 network in primetime among adults 18-49), TNT (#2 network in total day among adults 25-54), and HBO (most Primetime Emmy Awards of any network) all performed well. Warner Bros. delivered hits Gravity and Her.

Looking ahead, The Lego Movie may inspire a sequel, and 300: Rise of an Empire continues a successful brand. However, while everything is well at Time Warner, its brands can't be leveraged to the same extent that Disney can leverage its brands.

The Foolish takeaway
Disney has several potential future growth catalysts, partially in thanks to the ability to leverage some of these brands across all segments: added installments to Cars and The Incredibles, a sequel and Broadway show for Frozen, Star Wars: Episode VII, and Shanghai Disney Resort. While nothing is a guarantee, it would be difficult to find another company that is so fiscally sound and "mature" while also offering significant future growth potential. However, please do your own research prior to making any investment decisions.

Disney is very impressive, but it's not Motley Fool's top pick for the year....

Fears of rising rates killing bull overblown?

NEW YORK — Will rising interest rates crush stocks? Wall Street bears fear the worst. But history says the fear is overblown.

The performance of the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index in periods when the 10-year Treasury note is rising has actually been positive, according to an analysis by Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ.

Last week, stocks hit a rough patch when Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said the Fed could start hiking short-term rates, currently pegged near 0%, within six months of the end of its bond-buying program. That pushed up the timetable for the first rate hike to as early as April 2015, sooner than the late-2015 date Wall Street was expecting. It also nudged long-term rates higher.

U.S. stocks kicked off the new week with a weaker tone, with the S&P 500 shedding 0.5% Monday.

TRACK YOUR STOCKS: Get real-time quotes with our free Portfolio Tracker

While low rates have been the main driving force behind the stock market's big move since the March 2009 low, an environment of slowly rising rates may not be as damaging as investors might think.

The 10-year Treasury note ticked down to 2.73% Monday, up from its 2014 low of 2.58% but below the 3.03% yield at the end of 2013.

Some quick statistics:

• Commodities, stocks and real estate investment trusts all posted positive monthly returns, on average, during months when the yield on the 10-year note was rising, data since the end of 1976 show. The S&P 500 rose 0.9% per month.

"Commodities, stocks and REITs are natural inflation hedges," says Stovall. "Higher rates are (also) usually a sign of improved economic conditions."

• The S&P 500 didn't start to feel the pain of higher rates and suffer median monthly declines until the 10-year note rose above 6%, data since 1953 show.

"6% is the line in the sand," says Stovall.

But he throws in a caveat: "This time around stock prices may not wait until the 10-year note hits 6%, sin! ce the climb started from such a low level," says Stovall. The speed at which the 10-year note rises is also key. The faster rates rise, the more potential for stocks to react badly, he adds.

The good news: Stocks have risen a median 1.9% monthly when rates were rising and the 10-year was below 3%, as it is now, the data show.

• Cyclical stocks fare best. When rates are rising, stocks that are economically sensitive, or those that do well when the economy is improving, post the best performance. Since 1970, the best average monthly returns were posted by tech stocks (+0.76%), energy names (+0.72%) and materials shares (+0.58%), S&P Capital IQ data show.

The laggards? Rate-sensitive stocks, such as telecom services (-0.17%), financials (-0.25%) and utilities (-0.66%).

The muted rise in yields so far is not a major threat to stocks, but that could change quickly, says Richard Suttmeier, chief market strategist at ValueEngine.com.

"The higher the yields rise on long-term government bonds the more expensive the stock market gets vs. bonds," he says. "If yields on the 30-year bond spike to, say, 5%, investors will likely want to lock in a sure thing and buy bonds. Rising rates will eventually be an impediment to stocks, but we are not there yet."

NCAA $1 Billion Bracket: What to Do (and Not Do) If You Win

It seems nearly unimaginable to actually win the lottery. Odds are often one in 270 million, but for the lucky one or few of each lotto winning there are instant empires built. Now there is something even larger than Friday night’s $353 million Power Ball lottery. There is an NCAA $1 billion prize for whoever can pick the perfect bracket.

The $1 billion bracket is sponsored by Quicken Loans, but it is insured by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A). Yahoo! Sports even has a sign-up page. What is so different about winning the NCAA bracket versus the lottery is not actually the size. Whether you win $1 billion or $353 million, chances are high that this is dynasty money. The real difference is that millions of people each year throw away endless money at the lottery, never winning a dime. The NCAA bracket is open to anyone. So, what to do if you win?

24/7 Wall St. recently came up with a 12-step what to do (and not do) plan for lottery winners. The reality is that this plan is almost the exact same plan that anyone who wins the bracket should do. It is also the same plan that anyone who wins a big legal judgment or unexpectedly inherits a lot of money should follow.

Top Long Term Stocks To Watch For 2014

Can you imagine winning millions of dollars, or hundreds of millions of dollars, and then ending up bankrupt in a few short years? It happens. 24/7 Wall St. does not want this to happen to you.

Among the actions you must immediately take are securing your position, getting proper financial and tax advice before you even go get the money, protecting yourself from friends and family (and even from yourself) and many other things.

Again, the odds of winning a lottery are astounding. A figure thrown around about the odds of winning the $1 billion NCAA bracket from USA Today Sports has been put at one in 9.2 quintillion. That does not seem right, and certainly many people have decided to run algorithms and programs out the you-know-what to try to better predict the outcomes of each and every game.

Many people will be thinking about (and talking about) what they would do if they win the $353 million lottery or the $1 billion NCAA bracket. 24/7 Wall St. already has a guide of what winners should do immediately. With great success comes great responsibility.

VOICES: Yellen takes charge at the Fed

WASHINGTON — When Janet Yellen stepped to the podium for her first news conference as Federal Reserve chair on Wednesday, she had something to prove.

Not because she's the first woman to lead the world's most powerful central bank in its 100-year history.

But because she has been widely labeled a "dove."

In Fedspeak, a dove is a someone who cares more about lowering unemployment than heading off potential inflation, and so is more likely to keep interest rates low to spur economic activity. A hawk is the opposite — a policymaker more inclined to raise rates sooner because of the fear of inflation.

FED: Changes guidance on raising rates

With the economy and job market improving but still far weaker than normal nearly five years after the end of the Great Recession, Yellen has a twofold mission. She has to prove her inflation-fighting bona fides while assuring those sensitive financial markets that low interest rates aren't going away anytime soon.

Yellen, who pushed the Fed to increase public communication while serving as vice chair to former Fed chief Ben Bernanke, generally achieved those aims, calmly and affably providing grist for doves and hawks alike.

But she also learned how easily her words can move markets. When she suggested, perhaps inadvertently, that short-term interest rates may rise sooner than most economists expect, she sent stocks swooning.

Fed news conferences are a relatively new phenomenon, started by Bernanke in 2011 in an effort to make the often cryptic ways of the Fed more accessible. The Brooklyn-born Yellen appeared a tad nervous at first. As she entered the press room to a blaze of lights and whirring cameras, she seemed to stumble slightly as she ascended to the podium.

5 Best Financial Stocks To Own Right Now

While Bernanke was, by turns, professorial and genial with reporters, Yellen was matter-of-fact as she met the! news media after presiding at her first Fed meeting. Always meticulous in her preparation, she read stiffly from her statement. But then Yellen took off her glasses and settled into a comfortable back-and-forth with reporters packed into an ornate room at Fed headquarters.

Yellen has often said that she became an economist to help people, and that was palpable. She said that "unemployment and long-term unemployment remain significant concerns, concerns that are hardly theoretical.

Stubborn long-term unemployment is a big reason why Yellen wants the Fed to keep short-term interest rates near zero after the Fed likely ends its monthly bond-buying stimulus program later this year.

Yellen also had encouraging words for the hawks, noting the job market has improved enough for the Fed to continue to wind down its bond buying.

Her balancing act got a bit wobbly when she was asked to clarify the Fed's statement that short-term rates would remain low for "a considerable time" after the bond-buying ends. Yellen said a considerable time could mean six months, a shorter period than many economists anticipated. Markets rapidly plunged.

Economist Paul Edelstein of IHS Global Insight called it "a rookie gaffe." UBS' Maury Harris said Yellen may have sent investors mixed messages. It was a quick lesson for Yellen about the market-rattling potential of even her most offhand comments.

But the new Fed chief seems ready to take responsibility for her actions. "In many ways," she told reporters, "I feel the buck stops with me."

Intuitive Surgical's stock has been battered by worse-than-expected third-quarter results, which included the first year-over-year quarterly revenue decline in company history, coming on the heels of an underwhelming! second quarter this summer. Fool contributor Rupert Hargreaves notes that the FDA's initiated an investigation on Intuitive's da Vinci surgical robotics systems, after it found several discrepancies in its incident reports. As a result, quarterly sales of the da Vinci declined from 155 units to 101 units, a drop that can only be partly blamed on slowing demand for medical devices in the U.S. Intuitive may have underperformed compared to recently acquired MAKO Surgical (NASDAQ: MAKO  ) and Accuray (NASDAQ: ARAY  ) over the past year, but it remains the 800-pound gorilla among these industry peers.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The companies that are hit hardest by the tax are those that are already unprofitable even before paying the new levy. For up-and-coming robotics-maker MAKO Surgical (NASDAQ: MAKO  ) , which has already lost $32.5 million on revenue of slightly more than $100 million over the past 12 months, imposing what could be up to $2.3 million in additional medical-device taxes not only adds insult to injury but threatens MAKO's ability to keep growing.

One Year's Enough

Given the likelihood of major supply and delivery problems that this company may face this year, MoneyShow's Jim Jubak has decided to sell his position, nearly a year since he first purchased shares.

I'm going to sell ENI S.p.A. (E) out of my Dividend Income portfolio today. The dividend portfolio is too energy-heavy for my liking at the moment, given that I think oil prices are likely to be flat to lower in 2014, and given the likelihood of major supply and delivery disruptions this year. ENI—with its exposure to supply problems in Libya, Nigeria, Mozambique, and former (so far at least) Soviet republics such as Kazakhstan, and its exposure on the demand side to the less-than-robustly growing Italian economy—currently offers an unattractive mixture of risk and reward.

When I bought ENI just about a year ago (March 25, 2013) for the portfolio, it traded at $46.04. It closed last week at $48.31, after getting some benefit from the "Ukrainian-sanctions-weren't-as-bad-as-expected" bounce. (ENI closed up 1.32% yesterday, on March 17.) I don't see the ADRs (American Depositary Receipts) moving significantly higher than yesterday's price over the next year and there's a good chance that supply disruptions, continued slow growth in Italy, and a modest decline in oil prices could take the ADRs lower.

Last year, the ADRs, which pay dividends twice a year in December and May, paid a yield of 4.9%. That's attractive—and since the Italian government still owns 30% of the company, there's little chance that the company will cut dividends—unless the stock falls in price.

Since my March 25, 2013 purchase, this position shows capital appreciation of 4.03% (as of the close on March 17) and dividends of 4.9%, for a total return of 9% in a few days less than a year.

Full disclosure: I don't own shares of any of the companies mentioned in this post in my personal portfolio. When in 2010 I started the mutual fund I manage, Jubak Global Equity Fund, I liquidated all my individual stock holdings and put the money into the fund. The fund may or may not now own positions in any stock mentioned in this post. The fund did not own shares of ENI as of the end of December. For a full list of the stocks in the fund see the fund's portfolio here.

Quality video content has continuously increased in value over the past years, and this firm has a made a point of following the money trail by producing and broadcasting an ample amount of high quality products. From award winning shows like "Modern Family" or "The Simpsons," to its popular sports programming, Twenty-First Century Fox has constantly satisfied the market's thirst for entertainment. The News Corp (NWSA) spin-off, for one, was a highly beneficial strategy for this company, setting it apart as a pure-play entertainment firm. By concentrating resources and management on the cable network business and shaking off Rupert Murdoch's print segment, the firm was able to boost its EBITDA growth as well as its return on capital (ROC). The current metrics of 28.80% and 154% respectively are quite impressive and will be highly beneficial for investors if they can be sustained.

Mosaic (MOS), Agrium (AGU), Intrepid Potash (IPI) and CF Industries (CF) have been moving and trading hand-in-hand, with AGU, BHP and Rentech Nitrogen Partners LP (RNF) trading the best, losing the least and rebounding the most since July 30th. IPI has sold off a lot more in the post-news period, as would be expected from a smaller, less established company with mine projects still in development. BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP) announced plans to proceed with its Jansen Mine Project in Saskatchewan, Canada, potentially tapping the largest and longest-lasting supply in the world known at this time. Scotiabank (BNS) recently commented on Jansen, stating that the added supply "could add the equivalent of 18%-20% of the potash market over recent years." Nearly all of the companies mentioned have had a pretty predictable mix of upgrades and downgrades. That's what makes a market.

After Mosaic's (NYSE: MOS  ) and PotashCorp's (NYSE: POT  ) impressive quarterly numbers, investors' expectations from CF Industries (NYSE: CF  ) and Agrium (NYSE: AGU  ) unsurprisingly ran high. While CF's stock gained 4% in the week prior to its earnings announcement, Agrium's stock tacked on 6% before release. Unfortunately, expectations fell flat on their faces. The result: All four stocks have stopped short in their tracks, leaving investors sulking. The $64,000 question is: What should investors make of the situation and what should they do now?

  • [By Sara Murphy]

Agrium (NYSE: AGU  ) is all smiles in its 2012 annual report, highlighting the fact that it had expanded its retail presence in southern Brazil. In years past, Latin America -- primarily the Brazilian market -- has comprised as much as 26% of Canpotex's potash sales.

The common problem of telecom payouts
Inevitably, when you look at payout ratios -- the amount a company pays out in dividends compared to its earnings -- two companies pop up with potential warning signs: Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) and AT&T (NYSE: T  ) . Verizon in particular looks the most problematic, with trailing dividends equal to five times stated trailing earnings, according to figures from Yahoo! Finance. AT&T weighs in at "only" 137% of net income paid out in dividends.

The U.S. telecom space has generated more than its share of headlines over the last 12 months amid a wave of massive mergers. And, while that's been plenty exciting in this usually dull space, the real competition might just be getting started. With plenty of fresh capital and spectrum to boot,Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S  ) is taking dead aim at the two largest incumbents in in this space --AT&T (NYSE: T  ) andVerizon (NYSE: VZ  ) , much to consumers' delight. So what's Sprint's master plan? In this video, Fool contributor Andrew Tonner talks about how Sprint could quickly change the game in the U.S. telecom space.

  • [By Rick Munarriz]

I argued that Apple should wrestle Sprint away from SoftBank two months ago on the thesis that Apple can't afford for Sprint to follow its larger wireless carriers -- AT&T (NYSE: T  ) and Verizon Wireless -- into tiered data plans. Apple needs unlimited connectivity to keep buyers of its iPads and iPhones engaged. Google also has plenty to gain, and not just to champion its Android platform.

Hot Shipping Companies To Invest In 2015: Electro Scientific Industries Inc (ESIO)

Electro Scientific Industries, Inc. (ESI) incorporated on April 19, 1949, is a supplier of laser-based manufacturing solutions for the microtechnology industry. The Company operates high-technology manufacturing equipment, which consists of products that are organized in three groups: interconnect & microfabrication, semiconductor and components. The Company laser systems enable precise structuring of micron to submicron features in components and devices which are used in a wide variety of end products in the consumer electronics, computer, semiconductor, communications and other markets. Its laser microfabrication systems allow microelectronics, semiconductor, and other microtechnology manufacturers to physically alter select device features during high-volume production. In June 2012, it acquired Eolite Systems.

The Company laser-based systems improve production yields or enable improved performance for flexible and rigid high density interconnect printed circuit boards, semiconductor devices, light emitting diodes (LEDs), advanced semiconductor packaging, touch-panel glass, flat panel liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and other high value components. Additionally, it produces high-capacity test and inspection equipment that is critical to control process during the production of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). Its equipment ensures that each component meets the electrical and physical tolerances required to perform properly. Lastly, it produces systems that use photonic technology to perform precision inspection for control and defect identification. The Company Interconnect & Microfabrication Group products address an expanding number of applications and materials on a broad set of substrates, including panels, continuous-feed reels, and discrete three dimensional components or devices.

Interconnect Via Drilling

For electrical interconnect applications, The Company laser via micro fabrication systems target applications that require the ! highest accuracy and smallest via (hole) dimensions to create electrical connections between layers in flexible circuits, high-density circuit boards and IC packages. The Company microvia drilling technology addresses the rapidly changing applications in IC packages, multichip modules and HDI circuit boards. Its ultraviolet (UV) laser processing systems employ technology in lasers, optics and motion control.

Advanced Microfabrication

The Company offers several platforms that enable customers to perform precision drilling, scribing, cutting, etching, routing or marking on many different types of materials and devices including glass, metal, plastic, paint and ceramics. It also offer laser ablation systems that ablate material for identification and analysis applications, including forensics, mineral analysis and research.

Semiconductor Group (SG)

The Company Semiconductor Group products address multiple applications that utilize laser energy to process materials on wafer-based substrates. This includes traditional silicon wafers, LEDs wafers, and new ultrathin silicon wafers used in the three-dimensional (3D) packaging applications. Semiconductor Memory Yield Improvement Systems includes semiconductor memory yield improvement products are designed to cost-effectively enable post-repair yield improvements in the manufacturing of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) memory devices.

3D Semiconductor Wafer Processing

The 3D chip packaging technologies is driving the need for silicon wafers to become thinner in order to allow for stacking of wafers within the same packaging geometry. As wafers become thinner, they become more challenging to cut into discrete chips using traditional mechanical saws. The Company model 9900 uses a laser to dice ultra-thin silicon wafers, those with a thickness of 50 microns or below, and to singulate interposers. In addition, this platform can be used to scribe next generation thin film ! materials! that lend themselves to laser processing.

LED Wafer Scribing

The Company AccuScribe line of sapphire wafer scribing systems is a key component in the manufacture of LEDs. During production, LEDs are created on a thin wafer of synthetic sapphire crystal that must be broken into individual units at the end of the process. The brittle nature of the sapphire wafer requires that it be carefully cut in order to prevent unwanted fractures, yield losses, and lower light output when the wafer is broken apart into discrete LEDs. The AccuScribe systems use a laser to scribe the wafer with a precise groove between individual LEDs. When mechanical force is applied to the wafer, it fractures along these grooves and allows the wafer to be split apart into discrete LEDs. These systems are capable of scribing both standard and high brightness designs for general illumination applications. In addition, this platform can be used to address singulation of various LED packaging materials.

LCD Repair

The Comapny's laser LCD repair systems are critical to improving yields in the manufacture of flat panel displays. During production, individual pixels of a display may develop electrical defects that result in no light emission or the emission of only a steady white light. To correct these defects, flat panel display producers employ a laser repair process to isolate the electrical defects during production by cutting the inputs to the pixel. Its laser systems are primarily sold to the manufacturers of LCD repair tools as a key component of their products.

Semiconductor Systems

The products include industry wafer marking equipment, wafer and circuit trim tools, and LCD repair tools. Wafer marking equipment is used for serialization and wafer identification by both manufacturers of semiconductor wafers and within semiconductor fabs. Wafer and circuit trim tools are laser systems that adjust the electrical performance of semiconductor devic! es or hyb! rid circuits by removing a precise amount of material from one or more circuit components.

    5. Terra Nitrogen Company

The nitrogen fertilizer MLPs were easily the worst performing MLP category, with Terra Nitrogen Company (NYSE: TNH) rounding out the five worst performers of 2013 — down 33 percent for the year. Based on the past year’s distributions, the annualized yield is 11.5 percent but, as with CVR Partners, this yield is expected to decline because of continuing weakness in the nitrogen fertilizer market.

Mr. Market is right about this one
Is the market just overreacting? It may be difficult to believe, but profits really could take a nosedive if natural gas continues its upward trend. Consider that natural gas represented about 70% of production costs for Terra Nitrogen (NYSE: TNH  ) in 2012. Perhaps more worrisome is the fact that costs of goods sold were 36% higher in 2011 -- when the average price paid for natural gas was almost exactly that of current monthly prices.

Terra Nitrogen (NYSE: TNH  ) is also helping things grow. The maker of nitrogen fertilizer products declared a quarterly distribution of $4.68 a unit, and that's a 29% increase over its prior disbursement. With earnings and sales improving during the first three months of the year, it's making more than enough to cover the hefty declaration.
