Market Cap of more than $500 million and an average volume of at least 300K Beta of less than 1 = Low Volatility DCF valuation discount of at least 20% = Earnings translating into cash flow Cash per share and Current Ratio greater than 1.5 = Good Liquidity = Dividend Sustainability Dividend Yield of at least 2.5% = Obvious

Sturm, Ruger & Co. (RGR)

The company is engaged in the manufacture and sale of firearms in the United States.

It has $1.61 per share in cash, no debt and an expected EPS growth for the next 5 years of 11%. Analysts expect $3.8 in EPS for fiscal year 2013, and the current stock price is only 14.7 times that figure, compared to its peer average of 17 times.

It has an impressive EBITDA margin in the mid 20s and operating cash flow margin in the high teens. This has helped it generate impressive levels of free cash flows in recent years, and even when I look at the enterprise value implied by the current stock price, it's only 8.3 times trailing EBITDA.

The Phillips brothers had nearly abandoned oil for the stability of banking, but the war's effect on oil prices and demand motivated their return. This would prove a wise choice, as Phillips Petroleum's assets swelled to more than $100 million by 1924 thanks to the company's dominant position in natural-gas liquids -- and also because, just over a decade after Phillips' founding, the American banking sector began to suffer the worst run of failures in modern history. Phillips became one of the earliest proponents of gasoline service stations, establishing many along the side of Route 66, after which both its service stations and its later refinery subsidiary (now spinoff) Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX  ) are named. Phillips and Conoco merged in 2002 to create ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP  ) , one of the largest publicly traded oil-and-gas-producing companies in the world.

Why Shares of American Capital Agency Have Soared 28% Higher in 2014

The mortgage REIT sector is on fire, with one of the biggest beneficiaries being American Capital Agency (NASDAQ: AGNC  ) . Since the beginning of the year, shares of the mREIT are up nearly 30%.

A closer look reveals two reasons for this performance. In the first case, much of American Capital's recent success seems tied to its miserable performance in 2013. Since peaking near the end of 2012, its shares proceeded to drop 48% during the following 15 months. It seems reasonable to conclude, in other words, that investors were finally convinced that American Capital was a bargain at around $20 a share.

AGNC Chart

Best Prefered Stocks To Own Right Now

The second reason has to do with interest rates -- and mortgage rates, in particular. This is because the value of an mREIT's portfolio of mortgage-backed securities is inversely correlated with long-term interest rates.

When rates rocket higher, as they did last year, MBS prices plummet. By contrast, the tides turned this year thanks to a stabilization of interest rates relative to the extreme volatility of 2013.

It's for these reasons, in turn, that Motley Fool contributor John Maxfield believes American Capital Agency's stock has soared this year.

Recently giant food conglomerate, Cargill announced it had partnered with the Swiss biosynthetic pharmaceutical company, Evolva (EVE:SW), to develop a more consistent and less expensive stevia sweetener via Evolva microbial fermentation-based process. This is big news for the future of stevia because a microbial fermentation-based process does not have to rely on soil conditions or weather, and stevia can be manufactured anywhere, thus having the potential of guaranteeing an endless supply line of stevia. Through the microbial fermentation, the manufacturer has the capability to process the key sweet individual components of stevia using low-cost plant sugars, and allows for the individual components of stevia, regardless of how minute, to be developed creating blends in any volume, which then could open the door for these manufacturers to fine-tune its stevia to local tastes. But what would be most attractive is that, because the fermentation process does not require the entire plant, the method could conceivably shave upwards of 70% off the cost of producing stevia extracts.

Alamy Modesty has never been Chick-fil-A's strong suit. This is, after all, the chain that perpetually brags about inventing the chicken sandwich. Its outspoken CEO also isn't shy about letting folks know how he feels about traditional marriage or why his restaurants aren't open for business on Sundays. However, the quick-service chain is taking a surprisingly secretive approach to its efforts to improve its nutrition profile. In what Chick-fil-A is calling "stealth health," it's quietly making its food better for consumers without telling them. "If customers ask, we'll tell them," Chick-fil-A senior nutrition consultant Jodie Worrell tells Nation's Restaurant News. "But it's almost like you're forcing them to notice a change if you tell them." The chain has been working on eliminating artificial food dyes, high-fructose corn syrup, and some preservatives. It just doesn't want to shout it from the rooftops until it knows that customers can't taste the difference. "We didn't necessarily want the customer to know we've tweaked their favorite product," Worrell explains. Burger King (BKW) has been actively marketing its new crinkle-cut Satisfries as having 40 percent less fat and 30 percent fewer calories than its larger burger rival's french fries. Chick-fil-A may eventually get to crowing about its changes, but for now, it's quietly communicating with its harshest critics. FoodBabe.com blogger Vani Hari didn't pull any punches in calling out Chick-fil-A two years ago, when she suggested it should consider changing its name to Chemical-Fil-A. The chain reached out to her, inviting her out to see the progress that the chain is doing to improve the nutritional quality of its menu. She did, naturally blogging about it earlier this month. • [By Roberto Pedone]

Richmont Mines (RIC) engages in the mining, exploration and development of mining properties, principally gold in Canada. This stock closed up 2.4% to $1.68 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $1.61-$1.68

    52-Week Range: $1.31-$5.50

    Tuesday's Volume: 76,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 101,786

From a technical perspective, RIC bounced higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $1.59 with decent upside volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $1.31 to its recent high of $1.71. During that move, shares of RIC have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of RIC within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if RIC manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $1.71 to $1.80 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in RIC as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $1.59 or above more near-term support levels at $1.50 to $1.44 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 101,786 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then RIC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.10 to $2.20. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give RIC a chance to tag its 200-day moving average at $2.48.

Margins matter. The more Ignite Restaurant Group (Nasdaq: IRG  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Ignite Restaurant Group's competitive position could be.

Why Universal Display, Taseko Mines, and Organovo Holdings Jumped Today

The stock market fought its way back from early losses on Friday, with investors taking heart from positive economic data, even as they prepared for the beginning of a new earnings season in the next couple of weeks. At least for now, it appears that policy makers will do their utmost to prevent any huge disruption in the stock market, and that boded well for shareholders today. In particular, shares of Universal Display (NASDAQ: OLED  ) , Taseko Mines (NYSEMKT: TGB  ) , and Organovo Holdings (NYSEMKT: ONVO  ) were among the best performers of the day, with their excitement helping to carry the whole market higher.

Source: Universal Display.

Universal Display jumped 8% after the maker of organic LED technology earned favorable comments from Wall Street analysts. The bullish argument for the company included assertions that the long-awaited launch of new large-screen television displays using Universal Display technology could help boost the company's results in the second half of 2014, and new applications, such as wearable technology, could present other growth opportunities. Universal Display has hoped for its customers to ramp up their demand for a while, but patient investors could be close to earning their reward if analysts are correct.

Best US Companies For 2015

Taseko Mines rose almost 10% as shareholders favorably considered yesterday afternoon's decision from Canada's highest court regarding the company's key New Prosperity mine in British Columbia. The project has been held up in part by claims from First Nations aboriginal peoples that the New Prosperity mine lies within the boundaries of traditional territorial lands. Yesterday's court decision confirms the Tsilhqot'in First Nation's title to traditional lands beyond its formally defined reserve area, but it leaves the New Prosperity mine beyond those boundaries. Taseko hopes that the decision will remove objections to the development, and improve First Nations' relations with the company going forward.

Source: Organovo Holdings.

Organovo Holdings gained another 6%, adding to its impressive 12% rise from Thursday after a well-regarded researcher gave positive remarks about the potential for Organovo's 3-D liver assay test system to detect toxic substances that could do damage to liver tissue, even at relatively low levels. Given the need for tests like this to be sensitive enough to pick up potential problems under ordinary human-body conditions, the results helped bolster Organovo investors' bullish arguments for the stock. Organovo hopes to launch the liver assay test by the end of the year and, although that's ambitious, it's also a good sign that the company understands the need to jump on the opportunity in the 3-D niche while investors still have interest in it.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The drug fakery came to the attention of Eli Lilly and Co. in 2007, when a British packager noticed upside-down batch numbers on blister packs of Zyprexa, a popular medicine to treat schizophrenia.

Lilly confirmed the foil packs held illegal knockoffs, filled with impurities and containing only 55 to 80 percent of the active ingredient in real Zyprexa. The hunt was on for the counterfeiter.

British investigators soon found him: Kevin Xu, a then 37-year-old Chinese national who was shipping the fake Zyprexa to Brussels in drums labeled "carmel colouring." From there, the drugs were moved to Great Britain by a distributor who resold them as legitimate French stock.

Arrested and put on trial in the United States in 2008, Xu received a six-year prison term for misbranding and trafficking in counterfeit drugs.

Overall, the most popular emerging market ETFs experienced much sharper declines than the less-than-1% drop the Dow posted this week. Vanguard Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: VWO  ) and iShares Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: EEM  ) were both down just under 3% for the week. But when you drill down to look for particular culprits in the emerging markets, you don't have to look very far to find that it was generally a broad-based decline:

In China, more concerns about a slowdown in the manufacturing industry put pressure on stocks. The Shanghai index didn't move much, but one key ETF tracking the Chinese market sank nearly 4% in response to the news, largely on weakness in telecom giant China Mobile (NYSE: CHL  ) , which plays a commanding role in many emerging market-focused ETFs.
Indian stocks suffered from some of the same macroeconomic issues, with the Bombay market's index down about 3% and ETF tracking the market falling 4% to 5%. The Indian finance minister responded to the decline, which many blamed on Fed Chair Ben Bernanke's comments, by saying, "We think that Bernanke's statement has been misunderstood or misinterpreted." Yet that didn't seem to appease investors in outward-directed industries like Infosys (NYSE: INFY  ) , whose IT offerings require health activity levels not just in India but in the U.S. and other customer-heavy countries as well.
Stocks in Mexico suffered declines of almost 5%, retracing some ground after an extraordinarily strong stretch of gains on optimism about the country's ability to reinvigorate its economy beyond its core reliance on petroleum and to resolve ongoing conflicts with drug cartels.

But there were some relatively bright spots in other emerging markets. Brazilian stocks were actually up a bit on the week, as the nation found itself better insulated from all the happenings in Asia related to China and Japan. Russian stocks also remained relatively stable,

Pfizer Net Income Growth Is Increasing Leading to Increase in Its Operating Margins

Net incomes and operating margins of a company give some insights into its financial health. Pfizer net income growth has accelerated this year. In fact, when compared with its direct competitors like Merck, Novartis, and Sanofi, the rate of increase of net income growth trailing twelve months (TTM) is greatest at Pfizer with $10.68 billion followed by Novartis with $9.37 billion while Merck and Sanofi lagged behind with $4.53 billion and $4.05 billion respectively. Really, rather than increasing, there has been a decrease in Merck and Sanofi net incomes this year which should be a source of concern for investors. A healthy operating margin shows that a company is earning more per dollar of sales and, hence, able to pay for its fixed costs including interest on debt.

"Fat China" Author Sizes Up Taiwan's Success In China's Food Market, Rising M&A

If history is a guide, the new 2014 Taiwan Rich List due this week will include food industry billionaires Tsai Eng-Meng of Want Want (last year's No. 1), along with Wei Ing-chou and his brothers who run Tingyi (last year's No. 3).  What gives these and other Taiwan food and beverage companies such staying power in the mainland in the face of competition from global giants such as Coke, Pepsi and Unilever, as well as local players such as Wahaha?

To find out more, I exchanged with Matthew Crabbe, research director for the Asia-Pacific at market research firm Mintel. Crabbe is the co-author of "Fat China: How Expanding Waistlines Are Changing a Nation" (2010).  His most recently published title out this year is "Myth-Busting China's Numbers: Understanding and Using China's Statistics."

Besides the success of Taiwan leaders, Crabbe also explained why slower economic growth in China is likely to lead to more consolidation of its food industry, and why Chinese food companies in search of quality products and innovation skills are poised to continue a recent flurry of overseas acquisitions and investments.  Excerpts follow.

Q. What accounts for the staying power of Taiwan's big food and beverage companies such as Want Want, Tingyi and Uni-President in the China market?

A. What has set Taiwanese brands such as Want Want, Tingyi and Uni-President apart from their mainland counterparts previously is that they have established strong brand identities, and have maintained leadership in product innovation. Being listed off-shore from the mainland also arguably gives them an advantage in more easily gaining the investment needed to further fund their marketing of new and innovative products to stay ahead in the highly competitive markets they are involved in.

Q. Why is it that home-grown Chinese companies seem to have difficulty finding comparable success?

A. Taiwanese companies hail from an island that has long had a large middle class, who demand quality of product rather than just the cheapest price, so they have grown in an environment that demands they compete in providing consumers with more value-added. Most food markets on the mainland remain highly fragmented, with a relatively small middle class until recently. This has meant most manufacturers and brands were forced to compete on being the cheapest, rather than the best in class.

The rapid recent emergence of China's middle classes has brought with it more demand for the value-added that Taiwanese companies have been able to deliver. But this has also created the market environment that encourages more mainland companies to switch away from competing on price alone, and focus more on raising levels of product quality and innovation.

Already, companies such as sauces maker Foshan Haitian (Haday) have been focusing more on higher quality and more profitable higher-end products, and shifting away from the lower end of the market. This has not only helped the company to rise to the top of the snacks market within the mainland, but also to begin exploring many export markets.

Me_headshotQ. As China gets used to what President Xi has called a "new normal" of slower economic growth, what are the prospects for more mergers and acquisitions among the various players in the food industry?  In what segments would there most likely be consolidation?

A. The slowing economy, coupled with rising demand for better quality goods, in already highly competitive and fragmented markets will inevitably lead to consolidation, and I expect there to be much merger and acquisition activity in the food industry, across all sectors. We have already seen this is the dairy sector, for example.

Most sectors will follow the beer market, where consolidation has come through leading brewers buying up successful regional brands to add to their portfolio (if deemed worthy of keeping) or simply to add local production capacity in new territorial markets in order to reach more consumers.

Such wider market coverage also provides opportunities for brands successful in one part of China to do well in other regions previously not covered. For example, both Snow Beer and Harbin Beer have seen good growth in southern China thanks to their marketing focus on being refreshing, which chimes well with consumers in the warm, subtropical climate of the south.

Q. What will characterize the winners in the industry in the next few years?

A. Innovation will be crucial in the coming years. Providing consumers with better quality products will not be enough. There needs to be strong marketing and an innovative approach to winning consumers' attention.

A good example is the snack food retailer Laiyifen. The snacks market is highly fragmented even by Chinese standards, with few strong national brands (apart from Want Want and Qia Qia) and where products were commoditised. Look at the snacks aisle of any Chinese supermarket, and you are greeted with a cacophony of hundreds of vying brands and varieties of products.
