In the world of stocks, today's losers are often tomorrow's winners and vice versa. The three top-performing stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average for 2013 areBoeing, Nike, andAmerican Express. It would be difficult to argue that any of those companies are cheap, as each costs more than 20-times earnings. However, a superior investment opportunity exists with one of the worst-performing stocks in the DJIA -- IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) .

This quarter, big economic bellwether stocks such as IBM (IBM) and Kellogg (K) have shown signs that the days of being able to use stock buybacks and cost cutting to generate growth in earnings per share, even when revenue isn't growing, may be numbered. Or, at least, that the market's enthusiasm might be waning.

Walgreen (WAG) stock is down 2.4%, despite speculation today that hospital products companyHospira(HSP) could bid for Danone medical-nutrition unit in what would be the latest so-called inversion deal — and a big one at possibly $5.1 billion. Already in the works:AbbVie(ABBV) andMedtronic(MDT) are pursuing deals withsmaller Irish rivals that will permit the companies to switch their home base to Ireland.

AbbVie (ABBV) had its hepatitis-C treatment by the FDA today–but that’s not necessarily bad news for Gilead Sciences (GILD). RBC’s Michael Yee explains why:

As expected, FDA approved AbbVie’s HCV regimen “Viekira Pak” to treat HCV GT1 today. The price has yet to be announced but the label is available which we view as overall net “a little better than Street expectations”. Bottom line is we think the details in the label are mostly in-line in a broader sense and so this won’t impact or change the big picture: in our view, Gilead Sciences will hit their consensus estimates for 2015 and AbbVie will get some share and since they’ll both live in harmony and the market is rational, investors will feel relieved and stock grinds higher over time…

Our view on AbbVie’s drug is that it will price around $85k for 12 weeks. They will likely rebate to get some share. We think they will not aggressively slash price because they want to protect market long-term as they have a 2nd gen drug coming. Thus since everyone agrees the market is big long term, we believe they want to all protect price as it is a long term market.

Shares of Abbvie have gained 0.3% to $67.88 in-after hours trading after dropping 0.3% during normal market hours today, while Gilead Sciences has dipped 0.1% to $108.45 after rising 2.8%.
